Nebraska City  —  McKinnis Roofing has begun work to replace the roof at the Morton-James Public Library with a Gerard stone coated metal roof.

City commissioners agreed to seek bids for the new roof in December after Library Director Barbara Hegr reported that the most recent attempt to fix leaks had failed.

The original library roof was constructed with “Spanish tile” and the new roof will resemble that design.

It is also expected to last longer than the asphalt shingles being removed Friday.

“It is called a permanent roof,” said site supervisor Aaron Brock.

He said the metal roof will stand up to hail and high winds and the Gerard website shows photographs of neighborhoods where fire spread from one rooftop to another, but the stone coated metal roofs were intact.

Brock said the roof provides for superior ventilation because it is built off of the deck.

“This is the most complicated roof to build. We’ll be here a while,” he said.

The library expects the project to be completed in six to eight weeks.
