“Building’s roof collapses in Melville”

“A combination of too much snow and ice and an aging structure proved too much for a Melville commercial building where the roof collapsed Tuesday.”

“REGINA — Mark Orosz heard the old building on Melville’s Main
Street creaking around him as he worked to remove what he could from the unstable structure.”

“You weren’t staying in one spot. You had the doors opened and ready to run,” he recalled Wednesday.

“About five minutes after the salvage operation was complete, the roof came crashing down under the weight of this winter’s heavy snowfall.”

“I got lucky – well I guess lucky,” Orosz said.

“Although it’s not so fortunate for the 7,000 square-foot building which now lays mostly in ruins, Orosz is relieved no one was hurt and most of the valuables, including a couple vintage cars, were safely removed.”

“I miss the old building. It was nice to have for a storage place and workshop,” he admitted. “It’s just going to be an empty spot now.”

“Known as the Community Publishing building – for its former purpose as a press plant printing about 20 community newspapers until 2008 – it housed a hair salon and a vacuum shop at the front, while the back was warehouse space for storage, including a portion used for materials from the nearby hardware store. The back warehouse bore the brunt of the damage when its roof collapsed Tuesday evening.”

“With the snow load that we’ve had this year and with the freeze-thaw going on, we got quite a bit of ice forming up on the roof, and the snow was getting heavier because of the thawing and the melting, it put a little extra strain on the roof,” explained Tyrone Mogenson, Melville’s fire chief and building inspector.”

“We had a couple rafters that, I believe because of the age of them, let go,” he added.

“The building was constructed of concrete bricks and long trusses.”

“It’s unfortunate. But at the end of the day, it boils down to the age of the building and materials that were used back in the day,” Mogen-son said.

“Orosz owns the local newspaper and bought the multi-decade-old building around 2009 after it had sat empty. He was there doing paperwork around 4 p.m. Tuesday when he suddenly heard “a crack.”

“I looked at the wall, and I noticed the roof was sagging a bit,” he said, explaining the top wall on the south side had bowed.

“City officials came out as did a contractor, who stabilized the wall using a forklift with a boom in hopes of buying some time to take out the building’s contents, shore up the structure and remove the snow load.”

“Orosz alerted the business tenants that the building was unsafe, then he and others began removing valuables, including boats, cars, quads and snowmobiles that were in storage.”

“We just finished moving the stuff out at about 7: 15 p.m. … I was taking a truck load over to a buddy’s place only a couple blocks away, and I just got there and my phone rang – the building had collapsed,” he said. Fire crews responded to the emergency, but other than some sparking from electrical wires, there was no fire. Orosz said he removed the snow once this winter from the peaked tin roof, but it had unfortunately piled up again.”

“When it sits up there as fluff, it’s not that heavy,” noted Mogen-son. “But when it starts melting and starts condensing, it can get heavier.”
