Flames and smoke rising outside a bedroom window of a west-side residence were knocked down in a matter of minutes by Topeka fire crews Tuesday afternoon.

A fire investigator later determined the blaze to have been accidentally caused by unattended candles, resulting in $25,000 in damages.

First-arriving personnel around 2:20 p.m. reported heavy smoke and flames on the south side of the home at 2000 S.W. James, particularly from a window in the southeast corner of the structure.

Battalion Chief Todd Williams said his crews had the blaze doused in 10 to 15 minutes, and that the home’s only occupant was safe outside the house upon arrival of emergency crews.

Fire Investigator Michael Martin said suppression crews attacked the blaze from the interior using preconnected water lines. Rescue crews simultaneously searched the structure to ensure there were no fire victims.

Investigation revealed the origin of the blaze to be in a bedroom on the southeast corner of the house. The fire was classified as accidental, associated with unattended candles, Martin said.

Martin estimated the damage to be $25,000 total — $15,000 to the structure and $10,000 to its contents.

The southeast corner bedroom sustained extensive fire damage, Williams said, and the rest of the structure suffered heavy smoke and heat damage.

Firefighters cut a ventilation hole in the single-story residence’s attic because it appeared the flames may have crawled up into it, Williams said, though that didn’t end up being the case.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross responded and provided assistance for two adults and three children.

The dwelling’s worth for 2013 was $51,650, according to Shawnee County appraisal records.
