WAREHAM — Replacing the deteriorating gymnasium roof at the high school will not break the bank as much as previously thought.
Taxpayers received good news at Tuesday’s selectmen’s meeting when interim Town Administrator Derek Sullivan reported the town received a bid to replace the roof at $64,300 — $45,700 less than the previous $110,000 estimate.
The board voted to award the roof repair contract to Gibson Roofs Inc. of Hanover.
Sullivan said the low bid simply reflects the eagerness of the construction industry to find work in colder months. “Now is the best time of the year,” he said.
For student safety, he said the town is aiming to complete the three-day project during the holiday break.
“We are anticipating a cost closer to $69,000,” which includes a consultant to ensure the work is done properly, Sullivan said.
The road to the high school gym roof replacement has had many detours.
After a series of problems with the leaky roof — which forced game cancellations and disruptions in high school gym classes on rainy days — the School Committee asked the town at a special meeting on July 25 for a Proposition 2½ debt exclusion to replace the deteriorating roof. However, voters handily rejected the measure.
The issue came up again at the fall Town Meeting on Oct. 22, when the School Committee asked voters to borrow $110,000 to pay for the new roof. A high school student petition and impassioned plea from student leaders at Town Meeting helped the measure gain approval.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Selectman Ellen Begley stressed that the roof will be replaced.
“It is huge that it be a replacement, not a repair,” she said, and Sullivan assured her that would be the case.”
