The Thomas Bros. Country Store is more than just a shop for the Biglerville community; it’s a piece of history.

Located at 4 South Main St., the store is the town’s oldest business and has provided community members with various goods for more than 100 years. It was opened in 1909 by local school teachers Ner and Nettie Heiges Thomas, and was moved to its current location in 1911.

And its most famous visitor, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, stopped by in 1960 to purchase apple butter, dried corn and other small items after a game of golf in Gettysburg.

The historic building many believe to be the essence of the town caught fire Tuesday afternoon and firefighters were quickly called to the scene.

The fire was confined to the roof, which is currently under construction by Hobbs Roofing, officials said.

Though the flames did not penetrate the building there is extensive roof damage, said Biglerville Deputy Fire Chief Tom Leedy.

The tar involved in the construction project was the cause of the fire, he said.

No one was on the roof or in the building at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

Adams County fire officials said the building is safe to enter. The store is expected to be open for business Wednesday.
