“Worsening mold problem at the Parkridge long-term care centre has nudged 10 residents into different rooms and prompted staff to seal off parts of the building.”

“Now, the Saskatoon Health Region is preparing to replace the roof of the 237-bed facility, says Dave Gibson, director of seniors’ health and continuing care.”

“The amount of moisture particularly this winter has been a little bit more than what we’ve normally experienced – a lot to do with the amount of snow we’ve had and the freeze-thaw cycles,” Gibson said.

“About 20 staff members have since reported symptoms such as a runny nose, irritated eyes and sore throat, which could be a result of mold exposure.”

“Although no one is expected to need to move out of the facility while the roof is replaced, it will be noisy, Gibson said.”

“Parkridge has been grappling with moisture and patches of mould growth since 2007, Gibson said. Be-fore this year, it was “manageable,” but this winter, far more water seeped in.”

“Routine checks for moisture and air quality led them to discover the mould in three different parts of the building in January, officials said. They’ve since been sealing off the affected rooms, moving residents to other rooms and holding meetings with residents, their family and staff.”

“A doctor is checking the residents for new or worsening symptoms of exposure to mould, such as a persistent cough that has got worse, says Dr. Julie Kryzanowski, one of the region’s deputy medical health officers.”

“It’s important to remember that these symptoms can be caused by many other different exposures other than exposure to mould, including viruses,” she said.

“The region is about to issue a request for proposals for the roof replacement and Gibson expects work to take place from early spring until autumn.”

“Gibson would not provide reporters with an estimate of the roof replacement cost, because he didn’t want to influence the bids on the job.”

“Although mould can trigger allergic symptoms and asthma in some people, there is no evidence linking mould exposure to any long-term health problems, Kryzanowski says.”
