HARRISONBURG — A fire Wednesday night at the Colonnade Apartments left one office closed the next day. The Social Security administration office, which is right underneath the apartments, suffered some water damage from the fire sprinklers.

A small kitchen fire in a third floor apartment set off the sprinklers. The sprinklers put out the fire, but water leaked down to the first floor Social Security office.

The office will be closed until further notice according to a sign on its front door. Fire crews say that the damage could have been much worse.

“If the sprinkler wouldn’t have been there, the consequences today would have been more extreme. Not only in the loss of property and the interruption of business, but you’ve got fire fighters who are put in more of an extreme risk, fighting a more serious fire,” said Harrisonburg Deputy Fire Marshal Arthur Miller.

Fire sprinklers like the ones that put out the fire are activated by heat. They usually go off when temperatures reach more than 160 degrees.
