“WATERLOO, Iowa — A Thursday night cookout damaged a Waterloo home when heat from the grill apparently caught a porch roof on fire.”

“We had steaks on the grill,” said Sara Combs who lives at 1303 W. Second St. “She said the barbecue, held on an open front porch in 20-degree temperatures, appeared to go OK.”

“But about an hour later, after the meal, at about 9:30 p.m., the house began filling with smoke.”

“We came out and looked at the porch, and it was in flames, underneath the roof,” Combs said. “They evacuated the home, and some family members tried to fight the fire by pouring pots and pans filled with water from a second-floor window, Combs said. However, the attempt didn’t work.”

“The family dog was placed with a neighbor to keep warm while firefighters with axes and hoses climbed the roof to douse the flames. Two cats were placed inside a vehicle for shelter.”

“The extent of the damage inside the home wasn’t immediately known.”

“Combs said she is thankful they noticed the fire early.”

“I’m glad we didn’t decide to go to sleep,” she said.
