CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Nathaniel makes a modest income but never complains or asks for help because he’s good at saving money and being frugal.
But that was before the summer derecho tore large holes in his roof and a lightning surge destroyed his refrigerator.
To make matters worse, Nathaniel, 60, recently lost a toe to diabetes complications. He’s previously suffered through bladder cancer, heart attacks, strokes and seizure episodes.
He earns only about $680 a month and doesn’t have enough money saved now to repair the storm’s damage in time for the winter months. The roof now leaks and there’s a strong draft when it’s cold out.
Most of his income is spent on utility bills and medical payments and he doesn’t have money to buy warm clothes either. He lives alone and doesn’t have any nearby relatives to rely on.
Nathaniel finally sought help when he was turned down for Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance.
The Salvation Army in Charleston is helping him now. Officials say he still needs new boots and a coat and they’d like to give that to him in time for Christmas.”
